Erosion Control Project Set for Tahoe

The Washoe County Department of Public Works has selected Carter & Burgess, Inc. for its $1.5 million erosion-control water quality project in Incline Village, on the north shore of Lake Tahoe. Funded by the Nevada Tahoe Bond Act and the U.S. Forest Service, the contract calls for erosion-control improvements on existing highways and roadways in Incline Village. Carter & Burgess will be responsible for both the design and construction oversight, working with local subcontractors. Construction is scheduled to begin next year.

Office Park Planned for Southwest Las Vegas

CENTRA Properties and Panattoni Development recently announced they will break ground in July on CENTRA Point, a $55 million Suburban Class A office park on the north side of I-215 and Durango in southwest Las Vegas. The 21-acre master-planned project will feature six buildings with a total of 300,000 square feet of space. Each building will be two or three stories and will range in size from 41,000 to 60,000 square feet. The project will offer flexible floor plans, parking at a 5.5-to-1 ratio, pedestrian walkways and extensive landscaping. The development team includes Howard F. Thompson Architects and Panattoni Construction. Colliers International, the listing broker for the project, has announced that Stewart Title has committed to occupy approximately 20,000 square feet in Building One and Vestin Group will occupy 40,000 square feet in Building Six. Phase One, consisting of three buildings, will be ready for occupancy in February 2004.

Construction Groups Unite

Two construction associations that seek to further the cause of underrepresented sectors of the industry recently announced their partnership with Associated General Contractors (AGC), the largest construction association in Southern Nevada. The Las Vegas chapters of the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) and the National Association of Minority Contractors (NAMC) signed agreements to work together with AGC to pursue mutual interests. The two new partners will remain autonomous, with their own boards of directors, committees and finances, but each will be represented on AGC’s board and committees. "More and more, women and racial and ethnic minorities are being called on to deliver those skills required in high-quality construction services," said Al Barber, president of the Las Vegas chapter of NAMC. "Our partnership with AGC will give us the support and infrastructure we need to ensure those skilled workers are available."

NorthPort Adds Wireless Internet

Jackson Shaw Company recently announced the establishment of the first high-speed, wireless Internet access at the NorthPort Business Center in North Las Vegas. This "Hotspot" technology allows NorthPort tenants and business partners to access the Internet using any standard WiFi-enabled computer, personal organizer or laptop. The NorthPort Business Center is part of the Cheyenne Technology Corridor, a public-private partnership between the city of North Las Vegas, Community College of Southern Nevada and five commercial real estate developers. "This demonstrates the Cheyenne Technology Corridor’s commitment to bringing technology to the Las Vegas Valley," said Michael Carroll, vice president for Jackson Shaw, a national developer of office, industrial and flex commercial space.
